the weather forecast was for a fair bit of sea breeze swinging in in the afternoon just in time for racing, after a light morning northerly. based on that information and because nat had an exam she wanted to study for, we decided i would sail with rob. the breeze was very light to begin with, at times probably no more than 5 knots, but you can sort of see in the video when the sea breeze started to win against the northerly, and it picked up to 12 to 15 knots. the decent sized waves were the least fun part of it; you can see rob and i working to surf down the waves as the breeze started to kick in. a gybe and then get that hull to fly.
this is sort of how you are supposed to sail the f18: fast, with one hull (just) out of the water. with the breeze up that worked fairly well yesterday, but the waves do really push the boat around and influence the steering.
my steering is still a touch late and probably as a consequence a bit too fast, so i need to work on that: anticipate the boat. i guess given that was the third time sailing the boat it’s going ok, but that is in a large part thanks to my coaches: rob, anthony and will. can’t wait to scare nat with my new skills. 🙂
also rob and i caught an a-class upwind, and geoff is no slouch!
oh, also new personal speed record: 18.7 knots which is just a bit shy of 35 kmh.
