we don’t really enjoy this. we’d much rather just see the plants grow in whatever way it works best. the problem is that someone in the past has decided to upset the balance using heavy machinery, and now we’re stuck with all this semi-decomposed timber.

if you look closely between sec 19 and 27 you can see the pile of crap extends quite a bit further; actually we have already started to dismantle it from the shed end as well. you can also see all the juvenile vegetation to the left (west) that has grown since the place was bulldozed. the main issue with is that the kunzea has now taken over and is suppressing all other vegetation.

so now about 50 meters of the massive end of the pile is gone; honestly this went far better and faster than we thought. now we’ll have to carefully ensure we don’t re-create the same issue, and instead allow a broad range of native plants to colonise the area.

anyway, this wraps up the urgent part of our winter cleanup. over time we want to clear the entire area that was disturbed between the house and the shed. but that is a lot of work for the little excavator, and i suspect it will take us a season or two. at least.
